U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will travel to Puerto Rico to highlight education priorities and host meetings with community members, school community stakeholders, and local leaders. This trip is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s (the Department’s) support of the Puerto Rico Department of Education’s (PRDEE) efforts to decentralize and transform education on the Island, helping schools better respond to the needs of students, families, and school communities.

On Monday, June 17, Secretary Cardona will travel to San Juan, where he will host a roundtable discussion with members of the Initiative for Educational Decentralization and Regional Autonomy (IDEAR) to discuss the latest updates on the ongoing decentralization process and how the Department’s continued presence on the Island and technical assistance are advancing these efforts. Secretary Cardona’s opening remarks are open to the press, but questions will not be accepted. A press conference with the Secretary will follow the roundtable discussion. The Secretary will end the day by hosting legislative and educational leaders meetings. These meetings will be closed to the press.

On Tuesday, June 18, the Secretary will travel to Aguada, where he will host a meeting with members of the Association of Mayors and the Federation of Mayors, organized by Aguada Mayor Christian Cortés, to discuss educational challenges and opportunities facing local leaders and the positive impact of decentralization at the regional level. That meeting is closed-door. Following the roundtable, we will have a space for a press conference.

During the visit to Aguada, the Secretary will converse with educators, parents, and students. This event will be held behind closed doors.
