NATO arrives at the Washington summit refreshed and with its eyes set on Biden’s options and the future of the US

NATO wants to pick up speed. After a two-year reset, mainly due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the time has come for the Atlantic Alliance to take shape with a new captain, Mark Rutte . The beginning of this new era (yet another one) will take its first step at the summit to be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Washington, with an eye on the future of the United States, since a return of Donald Trump to the White House could change the tide for the organization.

NATO will, however, take advantage of its visit to the U.S. capital to celebrate its 75th anniversary, a key date at perhaps the most important moment in its history, but the event has nothing to do with festivity, as the current Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, has warned, as he faces his last major summit. “Rather than celebrating, we will take decisive decisions,” the Norwegian leader said a few days ago. However, the focus is on maintaining and even strengthening the aid to Ukraine in some aspects.

At the same time, doubts have recently grown about the health of the current U.S. President, Joe Biden, and his re-election chances. While he confirms his continuity, others are not sure. NATO needs certainty since the current U.S. Administration is a key pillar for aid to Kyiv and the transatlantic link.

Before the summit, two photos were seen that NATO did not like very much, and both were of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán: one with Vladimir Putin in Moscow and another in China with Xi Jinping. That is, in a dynamic contrary to that marked by both the Atlantic Alliance and the E.U., although Budapest defends that its plans are to “achieve peace” in Ukraine. Nobody believes it, and they accuse Orbán of being conciliatory with Moscow when he least needs to be. There are many countries against one another, and the reality is that there is no option for a diplomatic route, and the Kremlin has not renounced the invasion.
